With so many different burger outlets mushrooming in the recent months, it takes a lot more for a new burger joint to set itself apart from the competition. Steam N Grill Burger is the latest outlet that has leaped into the burger foray by offering healthy burgers with a Malaysian twist. While the idea of using otak-otak and serunding as burger patties may sound rather unconventional, the fusion of our local fare with a westernised burger proved to be a recipe for success.

As its name implies, Steam N Grill Burger uses either grill or a combination of steam and grill to cook their patties to ensure that their burgers are healthier than those served at fast food restaurants. The steaming process will retain a higher percentage of moisture and nutrients while grilling helps give the meat a crunchier texture. The Otak-Otak Burger (RM 11.00) came with a thick sheet of fish paste which was specially procured from Muar. As most people know, Muar’s otak-otak are particularly renown for their taste and Steam N Grill Burger made the right choice to source their supply from there. However, apart from the obvious colour and presumably healthier properties, I couldn’t really taste the difference between normal buns versus the charcoal ones but suffice to say that the texture was both soft and fluffy.

Using serunding which consists of lean shredded meat marinated with an assortment of spices, the Serunding Beef Burger (RM 12.00) was delightfully tasty with a familiar local flavour. The meat itself was tender and juicy as a result of boiling it for long hours before grilling it. Surprisingly, the melted cheese complimented the meat rather well.

The Vegan Mushroom Burger (RM 16.00) caters to those who prefer their burger to be meat free. Substituting the meat patty with a thick piece of black mushroom, one can expect it to have a rich and smoky flavour in it.

The fusion of our local delights with western offerings did not just end with their burgers. Surprisingly, the Tom Yum Spaghetti (RM 12.00) packed a punch with a concentrated taste of tomyum paste mixed with lemongrass stalks, lime leaves and pasta.

A special blend of wasabi sauce that was tweaked to have a gentler taste serves a good companion for their fries as well.

It took three years for the team behind Steam N Grill Burger to conceptualise their menu. Each burger was carefully crafted while at the same time retains its appeals to the masses despite blending ingredients that are uncommonly thought of.

One can certainly expect more unique burgers coming out from their kitchen that embodies their inventiveness and creativity in the upcoming months.
