A mishmash of Japanese anime and popular Marvel superheroes characters, Slurp Cafe will set fanboys (and girls) beaming with joy with its ingenious pop culture concept starting with its beautifully hand drawn graffitis depicting a battle between Superman against Son Goku from Dragon Ball Z on one side of the wall and Spider-man looking precariously at an imposing looking Hulk at the other.

The colourful vibe extends to the numerous collection of toys littered all over the cafe from glass panels showcasing life-size Iron Man bust and Batmobile to small cutesy characters from the movie Avengers lining up on a wooden shelf near the washroom.

Evidently, Siew Re Chung and Kong Wai Seng who oversee the daily operation at this cafe are fans of collectible toys and lovers of all things Japanese including culinary fares from the ‘Land of the Rising Sun’.

Relating the story about the cafe, Wai Seng, or more fondly known as ‘Kakashi Kawa’ said the initial idea was to set up a noodle house. “That is why our cafe was named Slurp Cafe,” he explained. Kakashi also mentioned that the graffiti walls came in much later when they realised that the cafe looked rather empty.

Slurp Cafe’s tendency for fusion fares was evident in the Sambal Pasta (RM 22.90). Combining the ingredients from our local favourite Nasi Lemak with pasta, it was a bold yet surprisingly tasty dish. The stir fried pasta with sambal was accompanied with fried anchovies, peanut, hardboiled egg, sambal cockles, cucumber, pan fried sambal chicken, prawn and papadam making it a familiar taste for many to relish.

Inspired by our local mamak, Slurp Cafe decided to put a twist to their burger by using instant noodle and meat (hence the word ‘Murtabak’) to substitute the burger buns. Aptly called Maggi Murtabak Burger (RM 21.90), the calorie-loaded burger came was served with a chicken patty and accompanied with potato wedges and salad as sides.

The lip-smacking Yakitori (RM 13.90) was scrumptious with the richly flavoured mentaiko-tare sauce deeply infused into the tender meat. Kakashi mentioned that the marination process is done overnight to ensure that all the flavours from the sauce are properly absorbed into the meat.

Slurp Cafe’s Ramen Burger (RM 15.90) was deliciously served with a slab of fried (deboned) drumstick sandwiched between two ramen pancakes. Interestingly, Kakashi explained that Ramen Burger is very popular in Europe although its name suggest otherwise. Like most of its other dishes, Slurp Cafe certainly did not skimp on its portion as the the burger came with a generous serving.

The Cheese Baked Rice (Pan Fried Chicken – RM 15.90 / Pan Fried FIsh – RM 16.90 / Pan Fried Seafood – RM 18.90) was a cheesy affair with an abundant amount of creamy Mozzarella cheese covering the fragrant rice underneath. “It takes a while to prepare this dish as the rice need to be fried first. Even the chicken meat has to be pan fried to give the meat more flavour,” he said.

A signature dish at Slurp Cafe, the Mentaiko Guru  (RM 16.90 – small / RM 19.90 – large) was painstakingly prepared with creamy mentaiko gravy made from a mixture of shrimp roe and white sauce slathered generously on a layer of omelette and fried rice. Those who are not familiar with this dish will find a cartoonish flip book illustrating how to eat an Omurice helpful. Essentially, it involves slicing the top layer of the omelette thus revealing a rich, fluffy blanket of scrambled eggs covering the rice.

Kakashi mentioned that his partner spent about a year to perfect the texture of the omelette. “We wasted hundreds of eggs while undergoing a tedious trial and error process but our tenacity was eventually rewarded as each serving comes with an incredibly fluffy and soft textured omelette,” he smiled. Slurp Cafe also serves a variety of other sauces to accompany the Omurice such as Tomyam, Tomato Kimchi, Curry Gravy and Traditional White Sauce which are all made daily to ensure freshness.

Slurp Cafe certainly boast an extensive menu which is comparable to a full fledge restaurant. “Everything here is made to order. We emphasis a lot on the quality of our food although the premise looks more like a coffee drinking place,” he said.

With its unique take on offering fusion fares, the cafe will certainly appeal those who are seeking for a more offbeat gastronomy adventure, one that will surprise and fulfilling in its own distinct way.
