Combining a self-serving buffet concept for steamboat and grill under one roof, Sazori Shabu Zone & Grill at Sunway offers a widespread of items to choose from in a casual and fuss-free dining ambiance. The four-month old establishment is a cumulation of ideas from its two founders who are steamboat aficionados themselves. “We love eating steamboat but at the same time, we are also big fans of sukiyaki, yakiniku and everything that encompass ‘cooking by yourself’ dining experience,” Ben Senjaya said.

Overseeing the daily operation at Sazori Shabu Zone & Grill, he explained that customers can also opt to have a grilling stove with either a choice of Korean-style barbecue (flat grilling pan wrapped with aluminium foil) or dome-shaped copper hot plate ala Thai-style. While they are essentially the same, Ben said that cooking the meat using a flat pan is relatively faster than the copper hot plate.

Sazori Shabu Zone & Grill features a moving conveyor belt which saves the hassle of walking to a dedicated buffet counter whenever customers need to replenish their food. The belt also allows the restaurant to serve the ingredients in smaller portions. “We noticed that people tend to take excessive amount of food from buffet counters. This will in turn leads to unnecessary food wastage. By using the belt, we encourage our customers to consume in smaller portions. This way, they are not prone to overeat,” he explained.

Featuring over 60 items on the conveyor belt, the restaurant prides on serving fresh ingredients. “Quality matters a lot to us,” he said. The restaurant categorised their ingredients by placing them inside different colour containers that are ferried along the belt. Blue for seafood, orange for meat and green for vegetables. Each customers are allowed 120 minutes to eat. Ben reckoned that the duration is sufficient. After an hour or so, our customers will already be in dessert mode,” he explained.

Sazori Shabu Zone & Grill also priced their self-serve buffet concept at a reasonable rate. Customers could opt for their lunch buffet and grill package starting from RM 31.90 with a free flow of slice lamb and beef to grill.

While the dinner package costs a little extra (RM 38.00), the restaurant offers additional items such as beef bacon strips, chicken ham, seasoned baby octopus and chicken gyoza.

With four types of soup base to choose from ranging from clear chicken soup, seafood Tom Yam soup, beef soup and Ponzu soup, customers will also get their own individual pot to cook their food. The Ponzu soup deservedly won us over as its unique flavour made from seasoned Japanese soy sauce has the right balance of salty, tangy and sweetness that enhance the taste of the steamboat ingredients.

To add a little zestfulness to the taste of the steamboat ingredients, the restaurant offers several condiments such as chili padi, spring onion, fried shallot and fried garlic to mix with ready made sauces (homemade BBQ sauce, homemade chilli sauce, sweet sauce, Sazori Speciality Sauce and Roasted Sesame Sauce).

Sazori Shabu Zone and Grill seemingly offer just about everything that a steamboat lover could ask for. With a free flow of quality ingredients and the option for grilling, the restaurant is an ideal place for a wallet-friendly and fuss-free meal in a pleasant environment.
