Taking a cue from the word epicurean, Epicuro encapsulates the appreciation of good food and drinks which was aptly described by Lee Yugin, the co-owner of his two-month old establishment. The cafe certainly offers a range of delectable fares that would bring a smile for comfort seekers who are looking for delicious food and great coffee. “With so many new cafes sprouting around town, we are trying to find a balance between coffee and food”, he added.
Having spent a good part of his career in engineering, Yugin was very much at ease sharing his thoughts about food. The conchiglie in spinach cream (RM 19.90) was his unique take on pasta by pairing spinach cream sauce with bacon strips. “We decided to use spinach as the sauce for our pasta by cooking it together with onions and garlic.
We pureed the ingredients to turn it into a thick spinach sauce and cooked it with sea shelled pasta, sunflower seeds and bacon to give the dish an interesting flavour”, he explained. Essentially, the sauce formed the base while the bacon gave a punchy flavour that worked surprisingly well.
The walnut & almond salad (RM 14.90) stood out from the rest of the fares with the use of red wine honey vinaigrette as dressing. “The vinaigrette consists of olive oil and vinegar which do not mix together. Hence, honey was used as an emulsion to bind these two ingredients whilst giving the dressing a nice sweet and sourish flavour.”
“We also glazed our walnuts with honey and mix them together with romaine lettuce, rocket leaves, carrots, tomatoes and cheese”, Yugin said.
According to Yugin, the pulled pork sandwich (RM 17.50) is one of the crowd’s favourite with tender pork meat served with homemade coleslaw and a sunny side up egg. ” We slow-cooked the meat so that the texture is both moist and tender.”
“It is quite rich and we decided to mix the meat with our homemade coleslaw to balance it out nicely”, he explained. Yugin also mentioned that the meat was seasoned with paprika which gave the sandwich an added kick. “We use panini bread instead of the usual burger bun as I couldn’t find one to my liking”, he added.
Fish & chips (RM 18.80) uses breaded fish fillet with special fries and house-made tartar sauce. The fries tasted very similar to those curly fries that we commonly seen in fast food restaurants while the tartar sauce was made together with Japanese pickles.
“A lot of other places serve their fish with very thick batter. We use breaded fish fillet so that our customers can taste the fish rather than the flour.
Being a two-moth old cafe, Epicuro is still evolving and Yugin reckoned that there will be new items in the menu in the near future. With a simple and casual environment, Epicuro is bound to delight food and coffee lovers who are looking for a comfortable place to dine.
