Mention the word ‘Kajang’ and images of skewered barbecued meat or more popularly known as ‘Satay’ come to mind. This is after all, the district capital of Hulu Langat where the the term “Satay Town” originated from. In fact, my personal impression of Kajang did not go far beyond memories of old colonial-era buildings when I used to visit my relatives many years ago. Hence, one could imagine my astonishment when I saw the lush greeneries surrounding the entrance of the contemporary Jade Hills township, a high-end development located to the east-side of central Kajang. Le Moon’s Eatery.Bakery.Zakka clearly set the tone at this prime gated residential area with its eye-catching green mint tone that adorns the entire three-storey cafe. Inside, the spacious and thoughtfully styled interior decoration will instantly strikes a familiarity to those bigger name cafes in Kuala Lumpur.
The two founders of Le Moon’s were charmingly friendly. Both Pey Pey and Pooi Yee who hail from mechanical engineering background share their passion for design, food and coffee. “The idea started from there and we later travelled to Taiwan to check out the F&B scene there. We realised that the staff at those F&B outlets greet their customers with a lot of warmth. Hence, we want to make it a point to have the same level of service standard here. Whoever comes to our cafe must feel happy”, Pooi Yee said.
Drawing their inspiration from Pinterest, both sisters have conceptualise the theme behind Le Moon’s when they were based at overseas by familiarising themselves with the vibrant coffee cultures and western cuisines there. “We are very specific with the colours and wall features for our cafe”, she said. Making good use of their three-storey floor space, the ground floor offers a mix of wooden dining tables and comfortable sofa seats. A bar counter is also situated at the same floor with their barista passionately crafting out lovely latte art. The second floor comprises of a large dining area, covering both indoor and a balcony area with the rest of the footprint occupied by their kitchen. The third floor features a large area that is reserve for special functions, workshops and etc.
Taking a cue from their family-owned orchard’s name, the word Le Moon’s is coupled with ‘Zakka’ which is a Japanese term for everything that improves one’s home, life and appearance. The term can also be used for contemporary handicraft. Hence, don’t be surprised to see a range of knick-knacks up for sale at a shelf rack in this cafe ranging from lovely Japanese washi tapes, handmade bracelets, stationeries and etc.
Opened since 18th November 2013, the cafe recently celebrated its grand opening at end of last month. The menu is undoubtedly extensive with a wide selection of food and drink. “We have a great chef, Travis Edwards who was formerly working in South Africa”, Pooi Yee explained. While fine dining food are served on special occasions, the menu at Le Moon’s comprises mainly of casual western and Italian offerings. Customers would be pleased to learn that they can also select from our range of fresh bakeries everyday. “We offer different type of croissants, muffins, tarts and cakes”, Pey Pey said.
The XO Dory (RM 16.00) which came with a sizeable portion was the first appetiser that arrived on the table. The fish was fresh and has a lovely crusted texture made from breadcrumbs topped with roe and XO sauce. The dish was complimented with broccoli and garlic puree as well as mushroom tortellini.
Instead of using Chipotle sauce for the Prawn Shooters (RM 15.00), Le Moon’s exhibit its creativity flair by using sweet chilli and coriander dressing instead. The result is a more Asianised flavour that will bound to be a crowd pleaser.
Aptly named Surf and Turf (RM 39.00), a combination of Australian grass-fed beef with grilled prawns were delectably plated by the chef with an option of sides (onion rings, fries or mashed potatoes).
“It is very time consuming to prepare the accompanying jus which gives a lot of flavour to the meat”, Pooi Yee explained. The fact that the marination for the beef was light enough without overpowering the natural flavour of the meat deserves two thumbs up. Texture wise, the meat was tender and moist while the prawns were nicely grilled.
Chicken Roulade (RM 24.00) consists of a deboned chicken thigh stuffed with turkey bacon and spinach. The flavour was robust while the meat was both tender and juicy.
The cheese filled croquette came with a nice golden, crunchy outer skin. Anyone who loves stuffed chicken will be pinning for this.
One should not miss out on their Chocolate Marquee (RM 15.00) which is made using premium Valrhona chocolate. The homemade raspberry sorbet has a nice tangy flavour that balance out the bitter sweet taste of the chocolate mousse.
Le Moon’s also offers a range of fresh bakeries starting with their Fruit Danish (RM 5.50). The pastry has a nice sweet dough with a large glazed peach filling up the middle.
Le Moon’s Egg Tarts (RM 3.00) came in a different guise with a sliced hard boiled egg enclosed with layers of crusty flakes. It was light and appetising.
The cafe uses Illy coffee beans (RM 10.00) which has a relatively consistent and delicately balance taste. “Our barista is very passionate and has joined a coffee competition recently. We do encourage them to spread their wings, in this sense”, Pooi Yee added.
Don’t miss out on their Hot Chocolate (RM 12.00) which has a very rich chocolatey taste.
There is an extraordinarily warmth and comfortable feeling stepping into Le Moon’s Eatery.Bakery.Zakka. Coupled with its impeccable food and great dining ambiance, the cafe will bound to attract a larger pool of customers from outside the boundaries of Kajang. Highly recommended.
